... and maybe he's right.

(Here's what Lee Gordon wrote on my other "Got one... Months later" thread:

"These things come in threes, so don't forget to keep us posted on the other surprise job you get between now and Monday." Wink )

So funny story...
After getting two gigs from clients I'd totally forgotten about, I got a call yesterday from Oregon. The guy introduced himself, said he'd gotten an audition from me about, oh, 4 months ago thru V123 that he'd pitched to the client - along with Allen Scofield's. Said the client declined both of us, but this guy, Dave, kept me in mind and just had something come up he wanted to use me for; a spec proposal.

So why not.... here's what I sent him late last night.
4 months... ya just never know, do ya?

Scott --
Love your voice and delivery, smooth and natural, as usual. But for this, I think I heard a little too much Southern in it maybe-- at least for Oregon. I don't know if that would make a difference, but perhaps for real estate -- do you think it's better to sound local to the area/more neutral?
Congrats on the continuing waves of gigs!

You know, Diane, the reason the guy called me is because he said he wanted a 'distinctive sound' that WASN'T from that area; something other than - as he put it - the icky djs (or something like that), so I let a little Southern drip out of me there. It may or may not be what he wants. We'll see.

Just curious, too... living in the South all my life, it's REALLY hard for me to HEAR the Southern in me. From the rest of you folks, how pronounced IS it in this read? I'm just curious. I know it's down-homey, which is what I went for, but is there a noticeable 'twang' or Southern accent that is too much? Like I said, when you LIVE it, it's hard to HEAR it.

Oh, well in that case, I think you nailed it! It's not twangy or anything, but you can hear the Southern cadence and pronunciation in it, on words like "center" and "elementary". I know a bit of my Brooklyn emerges every once in a while, especially when I try to be most natural.

Oh I'm sure you did, 'Ember... they've been sending me stuff left and right and I've heard a LOT of it airing. I'll be there tomorrow afternoon putting in a few volunteer hours for their fund drive.

Will you be making the 'social' on Saturday?

I don't think you have a really pronounced southern accent (it's not as if you sound like Paula Dean) but I heard just enough of a hint of it in your Santa Claus demo from last week to think it was a little more "south" pole than North Pole. Wink

Congratulations on filling that third piece of the puzzle.

Oh that's wild-- that Lee predicted that!

Congrats Scott! That's gotta feel good!

To the all seeing Lee: What do you see in your crystal ball for the likes of me? You will now and forever be known as the psychic on this board. Of course you could've just been guessing but where's the fun in that?

Congrats Scott!!!

I personally think that your southern voice sounds more trustworthy than those "icky yankee DJ voices". Ofcourse I have lived in TX, FL, and CA. Wink

Your read sounds nice...but I don't think I can afford any of those houses. LOL Rolling Eyes

You're gonna have to change that avatar. Every time I see one of your posts, I mysteriously have this irrepressible desire for Chinese takeout!!!

Scott:

Yes I can hear the Southern in your delivery, a little moreso in this particular demo - but, of course, that was your intent. Like you, I'm from the South (Texas) but have lived in New England now for just about 3 years. I think, because of that, my ear is more "tuned" to spotting the "Southern" when I hear it - just because I never hear it anymore.

And to echo what you said, I have the same disconnect: I don't really hear MY Southern influence as much as anyone else does....but because of my years in radio, I tried to train a lot of it out. I have this "radio gear" I go into to try to be more "universal" and, to my ear, it sounds like I don't have it as much...but even those around me, who are sometimes surprised that I'm from Texas and tell me that they don't really hear it that much will concede, after a period of time, that they can tell.

Oh, by the way...........

HOW 'BOUT THEM COWBOYS! 5-0! YEEEE-HAWWWW!!!!! (I just don't know if they've got enough to beat the Pats this weekend, though.)

Sorry, didn't mean to derail the thread.

Smile

LOL... to all of you...

As far as Lee being the PSYCHIC of the forums... perhaps. Or would he be the PSYCHOTIC??? No, wait, I can think of a few others who might qualify for that honor.

Thanks for the feedback, too, on the accent. I try to homogenize up to a point so that I'll get the work, and I have to watch it on 'formal reads' (ESPECIALLY the NPR work I'm doing now!), but also, I yam what I yam and it hasn't seemed to hurt my workload. I'll admit I'm always surprised to land a narrative from across the country, or even for out of the country, when I KNOW I have a bit of an accent. But it seems to happen. As this client said, he was looking for a 'distinctive voice' and I do NOT want to blend in with the billions of other male jox out there.

David: I grew up initially in Texas, but for years hated the Cowboys because I was in Houston. But I'm happy for them now, despite the fact that they really didn't deserve to win Monday's game. Now if my other former hometown, New Orleans, could ever get it together......... And we won't even mention the Falcons now.
