I'm just thinking about starting to think about getting into VO. Laughing
I have a small studio that I use to record original music, and was wondering if I could use some/any of the gear I have now.

Mic: BEYERDYNAMIC M88NC
Mixer: Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro
Recording: Tascam DP01 8-track Digital Portastudio
Effects: Alesis Quadraverb, Alesis 3630 Comp/Limit/Gate
Editing Software: Cakewalk products? *
Cans: Sennheiser HD414

* S/W opinion has changed to Adobe Audtition. ( I tried the demo version ..WOW )

Hi!
I'm not an expert but it seems ok to me.
I don't know Cakewalk products but I can tell you that adobe audition is brilliant.
Have you got tiles or sound absorbent of some sort around your mic or in your room in order to create a dead space? It's often one of the things that goes wrong.
Usually condenser microphones are preferred, but some dynamic mics can sound surprisingly good, I don't know this one.
The best thing to do is to record something and post your sample here, then we can hear if it sounds ok.

Thanks Claire. Smile

Will do....

After lurking for a while, and learning... I'm not gunna put a 'poor' demo. I'm in the process of making up a nice booth, and also making up a rack for the gear. (new house, and all of it's just sitting on a table for now)... also contacting my bud that has an EV RE-20 that's been sitting around. I may have convinced him that I should take it and properly use it. Laughing

if it's to check the sound quality, just post a dry read with no effects (just normalize and compress if you want)
A demo is a very different thing that needs a lot of work. first thing first, check the equipment Very Happy

Scott, I haven't responded because I'm not familiar with most of the equipment you listed, but I will say I use an RE-20 and love it. I've gotten great feedback on the sound quality of my demos thru it, but I think it depends to a large extent on the tonal quality and 'punch' of your voice as to what mike will work best for each person.

Here's a clip with the mic and a little compression.
Huge hum going on somewhere, and still too much high end....I think.
I took some breaths out as well (just to shorten the clip ...dial-up)
Just me and straight voice. (Vermont accent on some words) Laughing

:Edit: Noticed some "thumping" in there after upload. I'm not sure where that came from. It wasn't on the sample. Maybe after I converted it from 128 to 96k...or when it was normalized....not sure.
