Fellow Voicers:
And sometimes we gotta know when to quit...
A couple of weeks back, I was lucky enough to make the cut for a casting call for an animated Christmas (2007) special. I prepared diligently: recording, listening, critiquing myself for three separate character voices, two of which were lead roles.
I brought it all to the recording booth. Left nothing behind. I was into it; a whirling dervish delivering the goods with feeling and flair.
They kept me for 20 minutes, even adding another character for me to read. In the studio, they laughed and hooted and said things like, "Fantastic", "That was great", "Awesome".
I got home spent - literally emptied - but with that great joy of knowing I'd nailed the audition.
But I didn't get the job. Any of them.
And that's the third time in three years I've had that elusive shot at big-time animation. Once you're in there, you're good to go.
You're browning marshmallows with a blow-torch.
So in that melancholy aftermath (you know the hollow feeling I'm talking about), I feel I have to take stock and acknowledge that animation voices are not for me.
Think I'll cross that off the old to-do list.
Which is not to say that I'm checking e-bay for hemlock. It's just growth to pare our expectations and focus on our strengths. Sometimes the market whispers things like that to us.
Just wanted to share that.

Even the greatest actors have felt the same way, the difference is that they don't give up! Persistence pays Robert...please don't look at not getting this gig as a whisper to drop your dreams.

Andrea:
Thanks for the confidence-goose. You're sweet.
But please understand that my Sunday morning lament was only for the ill health of my animation pursuits. Three big-time swings; three big-time misses.
But no, I won't give up my mic 'til you pry it from my dead, cold hands.....
By the way, your demo inflicts boots to the posterior....
Voice On!
