So here I am, new to the forums and finding myself swimming in an entirely different level than I'm used to. One thing is clear; I don't have the right gear.
I cna record voice to computer, but on a cheap microphone with an onboard sound card. For the AVA producers they're probably used to that, but if someone were to come to me to do a commercial I want to sound a little better than that. That I have to record in a small apartment for now doesn't help either. Assuming you don't have a house and can't build a true studio, what's a guy to do? |

Keep your day job. Squirrel away money for equipment and read every book on VO you can get your hands on. When you have enough money get what equipment you need....as you get better, and money comes in, get better equipment.
Don't try to take over the VO world with sub par equipment....you will dash your hopes of success before they ever start.
There. Easy Seriously, if you want it badly enough, you'll make it happen. _________________ voiceoversbymoe.com

I'm currently recording under conditions FAR WORSE than yours.
You can do this, Michael!
You must be willing to make a true investment in your voice. Heed Moe's words - she knows what she's talking about.
You CAN build a mini-recording studio in a space smaller than a closet. You'll need a good microphone, an interface (XLR to USB), and recording software. (If you want to compromise, buy the Rode Podcaster. It performs admirably on all VO fronts and plugs directly into USB. The negative here is that, if/when you decide to upgrade to a larger setup, it will be as though you're making the same initial investment. You can't upgrade the Rode.)
Also, you'll probably want to figure out a way to deaden your recording space. On a budget, use discount foam. It sucks up sound like you wouldn't believe. (A comforter will also work in a pinch.)
Having said all this, again, make sure you are willing to devote time (and gobs of money) to practice and training. Masters of VO and VA don't need incredible hardware to produce a great sound. Sure, expensive equipment can help, but it's not going to give you a better acting ability.
Good luck, and welcome! |
