Can I use the script from an audition I submitted as part of a demo?

I do so many demos and some of them are really excellent, if I do say so myself. It seems a shame to just throw them out afterwards, when I need to put together a demo anyway.

I would use the script, but add my own music and sfx.

Would it be enough to make some slight changes in the script, so that it's not exactly the same as the original?

I have some of those royalty-free scripts from over there, but they're not as good as some of the ones I audition for.

This topic keeps coming up. You can use the script as is. No need to alter it for copyright issues if it's not for sale or broadcast.

The question you should ask is, is this copy AND your read worthy of a demo? The spots on a demo should sound like class A TV or national radio spots. Local spots will make you sound like a local actor.

Many think if they do a real spot that goes to broadcast it's worthy of being on a demo. On the contrary. Many times, a working actor will re-do a spot for their demo. Maybe the mix is bad, music drowns out the actor, etc.

But again, no need for you or anyone to worry about copyright issues with a demo. No need to search for royalty free scripts.

I've used a couple of audition scripts for demos if I come across one that really stands out as being good/interesting and suits me, but I often alter scripts to make them better suited for my voice (or any voice!)

for example, I changed the phrase "to build sustainable IT solutions" (yuck) to "to create dynamic IT solutions." (not as sibilant, and it sounds snazzier).

I've seen a couple of leads recently that specifically said that you are not allowed to use their copy in a demo.

And I seem to recall a message from Voice123 about this as well...or am I imagining that?

Oh - one more thing I always tell my students. In fact their final project is all about how to find good copy for a demo.

Use magazine copy to create great spots. Someone already paid a copywriter to come up with some killer words - rewrite slightly, change the POV, that sort of thing and you won't have to worry about this.

Anyone wanting a custom demo should really pay the artists for their time and Voice123 should encourage those wanting custom demo's to pay realistic rates to the person who gets the job.

Was there ever a script on Voice123 worthy of putting on your demo? No, you just imagined that.
