When recording VO, do you sit or do you stand up? I don't mean for practical reasons, but for technical/physical reasons.

For me, it depends. If I'm doing soft reads, I sit. For hard-sell and voice acting, I stand. Some may have other reasons for doing it either one way or the other, and I'd love to hear them.

I agree with Maxine -- definitely better for breathing, and more space for gesture. I find it more relaxing as well.

I'm a sitter.

At most of the stations I've worked, the production rooms and recording studios were arranged for sitting. People would always know I was in the production room, because the chair would be in the hall (since the rooms were so tiny).

Now, I find it easier to sit, because I feel I have to be right on top of the mic to get a decent sound -- and since, like Maxine, I like to gesture, I find the volume drops dramatically while geturing, standing up. Maxine, don't you find it difficult to record to your snowball, while you're standing?

Great question!

At home, I stand. In other studios- I do whatever they tell me to Smile

I have one company I do quite a bit of work with that forces me to stand. Not a big deal- until you are in your 6th hour. When my back and feet start to hurt- it makes it hard to stay in character.

When I do sit, I find myself sitting on the edge of the seat. I'm a mover too- it helps me to have the posture the character has. A big strong character makes me move more than a timid child.

More often than in the past, studios (and some radio stations) are providing a bar-stool arrangement where the Talent is neither sitting or standing but is still being supported.

This is also, I find, quite accommodating for just about any type of read

It depends. For short reads, up to two minutes, I'll sit in a comfy chair, right near the front edge. For longer reads, I'll set up a music stand, attach my mic to a boom and record that way. I also have a barstool behind me so I can technically stand, but have some support when needed. With the longer reads I find I need some way to maintain the energy and standing seems to help. Of course, all the coffee I drink helps too...

Depends on the studio I'm working out of and the kind of read I'm doing. At home, I sit. Anywhere else...it's a tossup. After standing for a few hours, it's a nice alternative to sit, even if it's on a bar stool. (too bad that doesn't happen at an actual bar)

I have an electric desk that allows me to raise or lower the monitor so that I can sit or stand depending on the copy.
