I took a turn as well, Paul. Thanks for posting the script.
I didn't Wilkins-emote (I eliminated the sobs) but tried to feel 'er.
(ooooh; that brings me back to prom night...)
Practice On!

Colin : Well I am just big cry baby you know - remembering both arms blown off with white bone sitcking out everywhere still hurts me more than just a little bit - even after 40 years - esp . when drinking and remembering! you know... still feels like - only yesterday... sniff sniff
Paul - You have a broad range of examples - kinda across the board on this thread - all suitable, ...but what does the client want ?- and for what setting? from a kinda detached rememberence to dial-a-cry... What does the client want the listener to know and feel, that tells you the approach... and why direction is a good thing. Cause left to our imaginations...

No no Colin - "IN JUNE" I was just pointing out that intrepretation of the subject, is subject to intrepretation. ...
Which brings up an important point - with the "Never Again" business... A client is confusing the Act with the Actor - with that kind of narrowmindeness... we are all capable of a wide range of performances, while one may not be a good fit, it doesn't mean that another one is not perfect. - In the long run the clients are shooting themselves - by limiting their choices... in future...
(Off the soap box now)

Everyone has done an exceptional and rather emotional performance. I humbly add mine to the different and wonderful interpretations of this script. Thom you are correct to point out that there are many different interpretations and one of them may be the one the director is looking for, however, it does not discount the others who have auditioned for the part and their abilities as voice actors.

My point exactly Jon - and the seeker is doing themselves a disservice it they throw the actor out with the act (for future contact) because the act (whatever it is) didn't fit their specific idea for a particular posting. - Also we get (usually) very limited direction in a script - and no ability to clarify before a submit... I am not judging nor commenting on others abilities - just pointing out how and what I considered in the intrepretation process.
Paul asked for insight in the begining of this thread...

Well, here goes nothin...
I feel like a young kid that steals his daddy's keys. He knows he's watched dad drive and thinks he can, but what will happen when he really trys?
Ya don't know till ya start.
So... here's a rip by a relative newbie.
Kudos to the pros above on all the various takes. Like Marilyn said, "What an education".

Spell-binding, Maggie....
You win hands-down on the "I never heard the explosion." T'was wistful and pained.
And throughout, you won that suspension of disbelief...I completely forgot what gender was reading. You've got bal....oh, no...uhh....I mean, you've got grit.
Emote On!

Thanks for the props Maggie...your interpretation was an outstanding performance...awesome. The part where you inhaled on "...drag of a cigarette..." and then exhaled was great...those are the small things that make reads like yours wonderful. Bravo!
