I became a paid member 9/5/06 and have made just under $1,000 for 10 projects: about half were single on-holds, then a short podcast, a local TV spot and three larger voicemail system projects (with a couple on-holds and a number of prompts), in English, Spanish or both. I timed every project and can tell you I didn't make less than $40 an hour on any project, but that absolutely doesn't include the time I spend auditioning (which is both PR and continuing education - also fun!). Although these were small jobs, they provided the beginning of a nice client base and I've had at least one repeat client already, and another has a pending script - so future work I hope.
So far I don't have to make a living from VO work. I do some graphics and web design and have a couple steady clients there; and I also worked as a litigation paralegal for 20 years up until last November and managed to put money aside (that paid very well).
I've got some pending scripts but no solid work so far this month. I have started charging the going rates rather than the slightly lower rates I charged before I read the Voice123 suggested price list. I'm trying to stick to it but of course, that will only work if we all stick to it and I'm not sure that's going to happen. Still, I'm in this for the long haul. Even if the jobs are few and far between, it's very gratifying to be able to provide someone with a product they're happy with and which I enjoy doing so much. |
Nikki.... so you do some web design also? Interesting, because besides the voice work and p/t radio work, that's what I do for a living. Have been doing that out of my home office for the past 6 years or so. If you get a chance, go look at some of the work my wife and I have done together at: http://www.spasticlizard.com
I'd enjoy seeing some of yours, as well, if you wouldn't mind sharing!
Peace! |

I know your site! I know I've seen "Spastic Lizard" before. How do you forget a name like that? You can visit me at AddMultimedia.Com. My favorite design is actually a site I did for my sister: DuetsBlog.Com.
I get job requests beyond my abilities every now and then and refer them out. I'll keep you in mind. If you want to talk more on this subject, don't hesitate to email me directly since I'm getting off topic in this forum.

Hi all, I do VO in Spanish, and is not different here even though we're less people. I've been with V123 for almost a year and out of approx. 100 auditions, landed just a couple jobs, $550 total. I work for a Hispanic Advertising agency (copywriter) and started doing VO's 5 years ago for the agency, like demos, rough cuts... etc... Started profesionally a year ago. Fortunately I got an agent in Dallas, and that's what had worked very good for me, It was kind of slow at the beginning but all of a sudden, I started getting a decent amount of job, so I got used to get paid well for "what I consider" a job well done.
Reading about what Nikki and Todd said about repliying to a "$50" lead, I really think this is what is making many well talented people at V123 to lose jobs and get very frustrated. I totally agree with Robert, it's demeaning and also unfair for people who takes the time to record an audition, edit it, convert it to mp3, uploaded to the page, post a reply and charge let's say $350 for a 30" radio...hit the button, and wait. At the same time another person is doing exactly the same and he/she charges those miserable, demeaning (I really liked that word Robert, totally describes it), $50 bucks. Guess who's getting the job?
It's up to us to make this great website the place it was created for, have fun, get good jobs, do what we love doing, and... make some good money. So please when possible, stop replying to $50 leads, unless is the radio you've been looking to record all your live. Thanks and sorry for the long mail. |

Well.......I'm part of the "old school" of voice-actors having helped build a national ad agency from 77-93. I sold out and put in my own studio at home to concentrate solely on voice-overs/production. Luckly I had several accounts that brought in about 65 grand the first year 94 and it climbed to over 100grand in 96 and just got better and better. One thing that I have been very consistant about is "being here". I stay in my studio at least 5 days a week morning till night and all of my clients are very loyal. I still have a few that have been with me for over 10yrs. and they all know that when they call......."Sid answers". As far as my price goes, I charge $175 for a 30/60 but the volume of 3-6 spots a day, do the math.
And I never leave home.......Oh Yeah!!! My "best" day was a National Vocal for Big A Auto Parts way way back. 1 1/2 hr. in the studio and that year it brought in over $12,000....but it was a Union deal. Second best was an on-camera stint for GMC with Troy Aikman (Cowboys) which I was paid $4000 for about 3 hours & charged $125 per market. Those are few and far between of course. As far as Voice123 goes....maybe 4 or 5grand a year....not sure. Sid |
