Hey Kim....
Too easy to do a list, I'll give you a bit more detail.
I started with a philosophy of Service and Product. Provide a great service and superb product.....and take it from there.
Yesterday....I had a client come back for a narration, who had me do a VO back in 2002. I raised my rates since then.....he still gladly paid for the service and product.
When you start with Service and Product, you can't lose. Clients will come back, agents will adore and speak well of you, those that find you on the web will eschew other methods of finding talent and just go through you.
So, to answer your question....almost all my clients return, I get piles of work from 2 agents (WMA in the states and PN Agency in Canada) weekly gigs from my website.....and almost nothing from paid for sites like this one...because I simply don't have the time to answer the leads....indeed, I'm too busy taking care of my clients.
Hope this answers your question... ! _________________ Regards,

Some of this order will depend on where you live, what you do and how connected your particular agent is - if you have one.
I'm in San Diego - there is not a lot of work here, so my local agent doesn't have many opportunities for me, but when she does, they are good one.
1. Repeat business from existing clients.
2. My personal website (been online with a web presence since 1996)
3. Referrals
4. Networking with associations/professional groups/word of mouth
5. Personal marketing efforts (electronic and telephone primarily)
6. Agents/Links to my demos on other sites (invited)
7. Pay to Play Sites _________________ Connie Terwilliger - New Yorker Cartoon

I am with Connie...
I am in Utah, and well... it's Utah.
My list would be like this:
1. Repeat business from existing clients.
2. Personal marketing efforts
3. Referrals
4. Networking with associations/professional groups/word of mouth |

My list is similar to several of the others mentioned here:
1. Repeat business
2. Referrals
3. A sort of hybrid of referrals & repeat business. Sometimes I'll be working on a project for an existing client and some new person will be involved, leading to new business. For example, I once was hired by a video production house that I regularly do business with to do a series of TV voiceovers for their client. This particlular client had a different studio produce the radio spots and wanted to use the same voice on both the radio & the TV. That became my introduction to the audio producer and he has subsequently used me for many of his own clients.
4. Internet
BTW, I recently had an odd experience with a referral. A couple of weeks ago I got a call from a potential new client who told me that I had been recommended to him by a video production company in my area. The funny thing is, I have never done any work for that company and although I had previously sent them a demo, I wasn't even sure they knew who I am. _________________ For more voice over demos, my life story, and other foolishness, please visit my website at www.leegordonproductions.com |

So....am I detecting that agents aren't a big factor for work for several people here?
I'm looking into trying to get a national agent, but this is uncharted territory for me.
Feedback please. |

25 years ago the mix was different. My voiceover work was 50% due to being a live Staff announcer at a TV station that had a sister Radio station and I didn't sound like the rest of the "announcers". I was the only female TV staff announcer in town, plus I had some acting background. The other half was from my agent(s) and all work was done in studios in Southern CA. _________________ Connie Terwilliger - New Yorker Cartoon

It's not a great factor for me. In fact, my national gigs have come predominantly through studios, producers and ad agencies without an agent. But a good VO agent in a major market is definitely worth having. You can increase your exposure for national promo/commercial work. |

7. Networking in my town and when I go to other cities to teach or work etc
8. Throwing lavish parties, giving gifts, showering people with praise, threats, bribes, jibes, wild nights...l (it's a JOKE FOLKS...)
