After years as an "announcer/DJ" and getting stuck in that mode, I have been working very hard developing a more "conversational" style in my reads for VO work. and I think I may have crossed a threshold tonight with a private audition I received for a phone message.
The bad news though is that the person received two replies and closed the bidding process. I don't think any of the 75 V123 invites made it to the client at all.
Anyway, I'd like to hear some comment on the audition that I did. The music was added by me so I can use it later on my demo if I think it should make the cut.
Thanks in advance for any comments. Both the legitimate and critical ones, as well as the mean spirited and nasty....

Hi Scott,
Your demo is lovely but if the type of voice you wanted to do was the Phone messages/on hold type of voice then I think the music and tone that you used will limit yourself in this market (it would only work for a very specific type of business).
I voice on-hold messages all the time and for most clients there is no music (80%) or if there is one it will be a more new edge type of music and the tone of the voice needs to be more corporate (by that I mean more authoritative although still friendly, think airport announcements or call your mobile phone voice mail and listen to your options, you'll see what I mean).
Also most announcements will include things like: to speak to an operator press one, to find out more options press 2 etc...
However, I also find that this market is mainly reserved for female voices , so if I were you I wouldn't spend too much time looking into this as I'm sure you'd find it more time worthy to work on documentaries for example. Your voice would be great on discovery channel type documentaries!

Hi Scott,
I had a listen to your post. I liked a lot of what I heard.
You mentioned that you're working on developing a more conversational style. There are two points in particular where I really heard "Scott" coming through: "Oh, by the way..." & "Here comes the beep!" I was able to establish a connection with the guy who said those two things.
Congrats on stretching out and working on new styles!
Cheers,
Dana
