After listening around here a bit, I realize that I don't match up to most here, but any advice or positive critisism would be very welcomed and appreciated.

There's a lot of talent in this forum. What a great idea.

Hey Trey,

you've got a good voice. My one major suggestion to you would be to shorten some of the spots on your demo. The holiday one is way too long. Best to you.

Trey:
Here's some thoughts from old Unka Bobby:
Your demo is fun, light, engaging and enjoyable. Your voice and tone are friendly and the guy-next-door thing that seems to be in vogue.
You'll be fine. I would, however, chop the Johnson thing to about half, take out the contributing girl's voice, and axe the fire clip after the sugar plums reference. That'll bring you to a tighter :50 or so, without losing any appeal at all.
In fact, the last part of the fire snippet is your weakest anyway, since your strength is a comedic touch and that dramatic attempt didn't work.
Simply love the Dustbuster and Western Boots spots. Aced it, man.
Focus on that good, sassy stuff.
Thanks for the fun romp,
Robert Jadah

Thanks guys. I'll shorten the demo.

Do you think there's a need to add any screamer stuff? Does anybody even use that anymore?

I just started a new morning show today, so I should have some fresh material soon.

Robert, do you know of any good sources that might help me capture drama better?

Thanks again for the comments.

I agree with Robert on all counts. Your singing spots are terrific, your delivery, the production - all of it. I also think the Johnson spot could stand to be shorter and that you should probably cut the female vocal; otherwise there are too many voices in the initial spot and you wonder whose demo it is. Are you both of the male voices? If so, excellent range. I probably wouldn't start off with this spot though. I like the opening spot on the demo posted to your member page. I do think you need at least one spot that's a little more intimate than what you have here.

I'm every voice on the demo except the girl. Thanks for the input Nikki. I don't have a particularly strong voice which is why I was thinking of taking the serious spot off. I get alot of requests locally, but at this level I don't stand a chance competing on a pure "strength of voice" basis.

You ever worry that you've been doing this so long that you're as good as you're ever gonna get? I'm twenty years in and worry about it. I wish there were classes locally.

No. I did this briefly in the 80's and am only just getting back into the profession now. Even so, my college degrees were in theater and communications and I've had plenty of stage experience: plays, musicals, cattle calls, singing auditions. When you use your body, voice, face, whatever as a performer, as an individual, I don't see how you could ever peak, because all that is changing with age and you have to rediscover it, hone new skills with it. It's wonderful.

Strong voices do get the big jobs, occasionally. But the guys I always see working are the character actors. You've got a very good product. Hang in there. As for classes, there are some VO workshops online (I haven't done them). I did attend the recent webinar and found that a bit helpful; but really, if there's a local acting school or improv workshop, I think that will help a lot, in some cases more than voice work. I did a lot of improv and VO really requires that. You're creating a character in 20 seconds. You might also like Patsy Rodenburg's book "The Actor Speaks." She's an amazing voice coach. Dame Judi Dench was a student and wrote the forward.
