Phone patch for home recording

I am just setting up with a new computer, SONY Sound Forge, & peripheral necessities. I notice that some postings require sound patch capability. Is there an easy to use, off-the-shelf gadget that can be used for this? I'd really appreciate any help anyone can give me on this. Thanks! MB Hutchinson

maggie... that's an awesome idea. never thought of that!!

there is software out there that effectively allows clients to dial into your computer (kinda like ISDN), but i think it costs like $600. this is much better...

Ima Newbie here,

I'm not even sure what "Phone Patching" is yet, but that won't stop me from answering!! HA!

I have a former client that had me record her teleseminars for her before the conference call services did it for free. I used this: Radio Shack Wireless Phone Recording Controller $26.99 Model: 17-855

Am I on the right track of the conversation? This worked great for us.

The cheapy Radio Shack seems like a "one way" device. Not a "hybrid." (two way.)

A phone patch is used when a client wants to coach you while you are doing the actual recording. He needs to be able to hear you and your PC's playback and you will need to be able to hear him all via telephone. It's only for coaching purposes. When he is happy with the read, you would send him the final high quality file(s.) by some Internet method. (FTP, email, etc.)

I enjoy the poor man's phone patch: Have the client put on the mute button when he calls and you start recording. Put the phone up to your ear (or get semi-fancy and get a pair of headphones to jack into your phone). Now, when you record he can hear you!

I was always wondering why phone patches/ISDN feeds are necessary given alternative methods of data transfer. Colin, you answered part of my question with the coaching aspect.

I used to send out weather feeds to stations nationwide--about 95% in MP3 format. No coaching is involved but we were always wondering why some stations can receive email attachments but insist on ISDN/phone feeds. It always seemed like a waste of time with the routine phone call, chit chat, level check, etc. Colin, or perhaps other radio vets out there, what kind of equipment could they possibly be using to prevent a more efficient method? (tapes still?!) I never worked at a radio station so I'm not familiar with studio equipment. Just curious, that's all.

I don't think you'll find any radio stations still on tape.

As far as ISDN, that's usually when someone doesn't trust the person to record it themselves. Seems silly to me since the mic and room aren't going to be any different.

Phone patch is when they don't trust you to know how they want it read.

None of this is common any more. It's all email now. Even the station imaging which used to be all ISDN is now reduced to emaling a script and getting a file back.

Some of the high end old-line recording studios run by agencies just can't seem to get away from ISDN because that's how they've always done it.

I used to get a pretty good cut about once a week. After 8 hours of splicing, I came home with splicing tape remnants all over me.

My ex-wife would say... "had a busy day?" I'd say, "yeah, why?" She'd say... "because you have splicing tape all over your jeans."
