Here's a tip from my new gurus, Pat Fraley & Hillary Huber:
Hydrate often, well before recording. Don't eat an apple. Don't drink a ton of water during sessions. It could cause stomach gurgling.
Instead, put some water in a small spray bottle and spray 3 short times as needed. Also, just lightly spritz your teeth.
THIS TOTALLY WORKS!

I can't spritz. I have a lousy aim. That Tums thing sounds interesting though.

I have a terrible time with mouth noise. I've cut out caffeine and sugar (for the most part... but seriously, I love Coke - I'm down to one a week) and have been drinking only water. Still have noise.

Tried the green apple idea - I really think it works. I'm convinced.

Someone also wisely suggested Chapstick on the lips before recording... which I now do. I think that helps a little.

I will try the water spritz... gotta get a little bottle!!

Caryn

I follow many of the tips already mention, but I have to be particularly careful with what I eat and drink due to acid reflux.

1. Outstanding oral hygiene (including floss and mouth wash + periodical visits to the dentist)
2. Tums antiacid, which I have to take daily for acid reflux anyway
3. No wine, no coffee, no spicy food, no coke or any other fizzy drinks (this is particularly difficult to follow...)
4. Water in small amounts at a time to avoid belly sounds
5. No milk, as it increases mucus production
6. Vaseline to keep lips moisturized (saliva only makes lips drier)
7. Vaseline over the front teeth on those days the mouth is unexplainably dry

thanks bobbin - i was going to say that! i had the same experience as PF with the green apple - bit into one before a session and was drooling like Tom at a bikini car-wash entire time ... bad news.

How about a glass of bourbon before a recording. It may not make you sound better but you won't care.

Between the lines of my smart aleck remark was that I don't really ever do anything special for mouth noise. I only seem to have a problem when I just had a big old glass of chocolate milk but that's to be expected.

Look for Breathe Right Snore Relief Throat Spray.

Spray some in the throat - but also spray some between the cheek and gums and on your tongue. The idea is to get the stuff on all the parts that touch each other when you speak.

Or, you could find some highly specialized stuff that has the "right" name and costs a lot and doesn't really work any better.
