I just spoke with the insightful Phyllis Tuesday and let me just say I'm looking forward to literally hearing what we can do with my voice.

It was just our first informal chat, but she corroborated things I already suspected, but don't have the knowledge to fix.
We talked about how I was perhaps pushing too hard mentally and physically at being a VO success and as such, am self-limiting my range, locking my voice into a small zone instead of letting it run free.

Reminds me of more agua-philosophy;
First, imagine a flowing stream or even plain ol' tap water coming from your faucet...you'll get more water by cupping your hands and letting it flow to you than you can by trying to snatch and grab it.

Anywho, Phyllis gave me some interesting homework and we should have our first "formal" session next week and I'll let you know how it goes.

OKOKOK......where to start.

Just had a one hour session where I learned more about me and what makes me tick, just by listening to my homework tape.

Amazing how I feel so much LIGHTER after the call than before. If you want some great advice and interesting conversation, call Phyllis.

I can't wait for next week's call. I'm off to do my homework....TA!

Dave

Ps. PRICELESS I tell ya......

I just had another session with the wonderful Phyllis. I am beginning to hear the change. Phyllis is helping more on more on getting a visual of what I sound like normally, not like an announcer.
Everything she points out makes so much sense.
Her direction and insight continues to be a gift to anyone wishing to take their voice over career to the next level. Thank you so much Phyllis.
I am off to do my homework.

If Phyllis wants to submit "Coconuts", I give her permission.

P.S. JJ, you sound GREAT!

Okay, confession time, yes JJ, I gave Scott a sneak listen to the "before and after" clips that you gave me permission to put up here - which I will when I get a chance to splice it together.

Meanwhile, here is Scott Paxton singing "Coconuts."

Andy, you were so helpful and I have many more ProTools questions. I think you're being generous with me. If I couldn't get the software to perform, then I'd have a few big problems. So, thank you!

My latest appointment with Phyllis. We spend a lot of time talking about things in life that are important...me....work....family...memories and more. I know from these meetings that my voice will no doubt be better, because I will be better....personally.

Hard to describe, but fascinating to be doing. You should try it...and DO THE HOMEWORK!

Best,

Dave

Thanks Phyl!!!

First "real" session with Phyllis.
Interesting.

Ironically, she says a throwaway audition I did as a lark so I'd have an example of a "stretch" was closer to my "real" voice than the auditions I thought I nailed.

Guess when you know you have no shot at the gig, there's no pressure!

Notice I said "closer", but not quite completely unfettered.
But we'll get there.

My new homework promises to be interesting, if not a bit dark!

Heh heh, for all those curious, Jason's homework is the first of its kind, tailored specifically for him - as each person's is unique. He's going to be writing 3 scripts as if they'd run on a radio station, for two voices. They are very serious subjects. They might indeed get a bit dark - but that is okay. Jason, I want to give your calm voice...a workout! Each time I give homework, it is specific to the issue the VO needs to work on.

Thanks Jacob.

Very raw recording. Just opened the mic and recorded that for Phyllis to hear what I did with my voice when I sang and compared it to my speaking voice. It has helped me move forward in my voice over technique and away from the radio voice I have used for years.

Another session.....another breakthrough.

Breathing....why is it so difficult for me to control my breath noise? I'm slowly discovering the answer, thanks to Phyllis. Why am I only using a portion of my voice? I now know the answer.

I'm really enjoying these sessions and I believe that we all can benefit from some oversight, no matter how minor.

Thanks Phyllis!

I find that singing really helps me control my breath. Sometimes a sigh or gasp can even add character to the read. If the sigh or gasp does not. Re-record or just edit the breath noise out. Very Happy

I just finished another session with Phyllis.
I will be working on relaxing my throat and other facial muscles. It was a stimulating conversation as usual with lots of insights into what I can practice and practice and practice--------
Thanks Phyllis

Hi Deby,

Thanks for the tip....I'll practice sighing....that is until I drive everyone crazy! *sigh* "Dave, are you alright?" *sigh* "Yep!" *sigh* "Are you sure?" "Yep!" Gasping!? That's a whole different story. BTW, I love to sing.

Today was another session with Phyllis that I LOVED. For all of you that do this and understand where the voice actually comes from, I found that today, or at least the neighborhood in which it resides. Now, I have to practice, practice, practice. *sigh*

Woo Hoo!!!

Dave
