I offer to do it for free -- which generally exceeds the budget.

Joe's response is similar to what I say. I try to add something unique that makes the client realize I've read the lead and am focused on their project. That's not always possible given the little detail we get from some leads. Yeah, details would be nice, like the client's identity. Also on audio books, the subject matter. How dreadful to commit to a long project on a subject that thoroughly bores you!
