Thom, you're absolutely right. I have used a noise gate in the past, but the room I was in was not treated whatsoever. So when I spoke and the gate opened, all that awful room noise was there in the background. I have been (and still am) in the process of treating my room with Auralex. I used several pieces to make a gobo, and I'm also adding panels to the walls.
Debbie, if you don't want to put the foam directly on your walls, a solution I found is to attach the foam to posterboard with Velcro and then thumbtack the posterboard to the wall. It leaves only a tiny hole, and you can move it if you like. By the way, I make the posterboard slightly smaller than the foam so it's not visible once it's on the wall. Good luck!

We are adding on to our house because we have a baby coming in October so now my studio is becoming the baby's bedroom. Now I am having a real studio built. These links really do help. There are a lot of people just wanting to take your money.
It's funny, we have started the renovations to the house and everything has been placed in my current studio. Now it is just a storage room. Now what I have to do when I need to produce a spot is stumble through all of the clutter, get my mic set up, pull up the script on the computer, grab a blanket and throw it over my head, mic and the computer and hope for the best. It's ok but I can't wait until I get the studio done. |

Congrats on the baby, James...when you get to Number Five, you'll find it tough to voice with ten feet and 100 toes pounding about.
In fact, I'm finally retreating to an isolation booth myself, now under lengthy construction.
There's a wealth of info at www.homerecording.com, johnlsayers.com, and recording.com, and Michael Minetree's site (Google 'im) has a super step-by-step - with photos - somewhere that I can't recall right now.
There's also some good stuff in the Geek Section here at voiceover. And Brian Hart has this kind'a knowledge at his fingertips.
Put all the info together, then stir, shake, and take a stab. That's my approach.

Here's a little more madness for you...
One piece of amateurish improvisation that I found surprisingly effective came as a result of a sudden, violent urge to shred the latest in the long line of thick, woolly, lumberjack shirts my parents got me every Christmas (nice pattern, dad, but those buttons were a nightmare...).
I chopped off the top six inches of one arm (of the shirt, relax) and, for no apparent reason, decided that I'd hang it around the mic - horizontally, like a kind of wind-sock.
Brainwave, or just barmy, it turned out to be quite a successful acoustic enhancement, which I used to good effect on a number of projects.
(If anyone sees a product come out of this idea, I want royalties!)
Still, you can't beat a bit of good foam - in the right places, of course.
