I have a phone hybrid setup in my studio and I need to record the phone conversation on a SEPARATE TRACK than what is coming only from the mic in the booth. I need to select a different input source on a per-track basis [i.e.: Track 1 would be the mic only (e.g.: Analog 2), while Track 2 would be both sides of the phone conversation (e.g.: Analog 2 + Analog 3).]

Will Adobe Audition 2.0 support this?

The answer is Yes, and No. What you are asking depends upon your sound card interface, not AA.

So the question which you need to answer is: What is your sound card?

If your soundcard is a multi-track card which allows discreet inputs and discreet outputs to and from the computer; you will select the multi-track area of AA first, then individually select each track, and the input button. Then, (your choice here) on Track One, select the input which has YOUR microphone. On Track Two, select the Telephone Hybrid's output.

You will also need to select the output of AA and send the Program Audio into the telephone hybrid.

Thanks so much for the reply, Frank. I am not using my computer's sound card. I have a firewire interface. I am using a Motu UltraLite and it has 8 INs and 8 OUTs. The hybrid is hooked up correctly, as evidenced by the fact that I can hear callers through my headphones in the booth, and they can hear me down the mic through the phone as well.

The mic and the hybrid ARE already on different inputs (Analog 2 and 3, respectively), I just don't have a multi-track recording software -- I can only choose one recording device at a time. So, in effect, it records both inputs inseparably as long as their levels are up. What I need to do here, as you can guess, is to be able to identify, through playing back the phone conversation, which takes the client wants, but then to be able to just trash that track one I am ready to deliver the audio.

So, that all being said-- will Adobe Audition 2.0 allow me to select a different recording device for each mono track?

Thanks again and in advance,
Garrett

Yes.

That is the short answer.

You have a great peice of audio gear. It will do more than you will likely need. Adobe Audition 2.0 is definately capable of what you need and want.

Again, follow the concepts presented in the previous post about In's and Out's.

Frank, thanks again!

Yes, it is a bad-ass machine indeed, and that's why I knew that my software was the problem. I read all I could online on this multi-track/two-track issue but never got a CRYSTAL CLEAR answer -- I just wanted to make absolutely sure of this capability before I pulled the trigger on the $350 for the software. I feel okay going ahead and buying it now.

You da man.

Make sure to use "multi-track view" in AA, not "edit view." Arm the tracks you want to record to. If everything is hooked up properly, the first track will be your first interface input, the second track the seoond, etc.
